Novatel's new MiFi devices have been only available for a few months but seem to be creating a lot of buzz. I purchased my Verizon MiFi device a few weeks ago and I'm very impressed with the device. The MiFi is a portable WiFi router with built-in 3G or is it a 3G modem with built-in WiFi. Either way it is one slick device. What makes it different, than the integrated 3G in your laptop or 3G usb modem, is the ability to share the internet connection with up to five devices. For power, the MiFi will run off of an internal battery for up to four hours or you can power via usb, power adapter or car adapter (not included). The size of the device is amazing and can easily fit in your pocket. As I don't have AT&T service for my iPhone at home, I put the MiFi in my pocket and was able to connect to my favorite internet music service "Pandora" as I mowed my yard.
The MiFi makes swallowing the excessive monthly service charge for 3G bearable because of the multiple device access. You can also pay the full purchase price and use the Verizon $15 per day service for those who use 3G on a limited basis.
I envision a number of scenarios where this device could be beneficial.
-
Backup internet for the office. If you have a small office you could have up to five wireless workstations/laptops running in minutes, in case of an internet outage.
-
Working outside of the office you could have an instant access point setup for up to five laptops; e.g., in a board meeting, field audit work, or at a client's office.
-
Have 3G internet access for your laptop and your smart-phone at the same time in a hotel room as you travel.
-
Backup internet access at home. Since it is portable you could use the device at home in case of an internet outage.
-
Save money on 3G service. If you are already paying for service on multiple devices, the MiFi may provide a way to easily share 3G service among users.
-
Or how about a long road trip using the MiFi to allow everyone in the car (excluding the driver of course) internet access.
You can purchase the device either through either Verizon or Sprint. Novatel just recently announced a HSPA model for AT&T as well.
